Long gone are the days of wallpaper being pase’. These days there is a multitude of different colors, patterns and textures to choose from. One could spend days, even hours combing through papers finding one more beautiful than the next. They also range in prices for every budget and even come peel-able so there is very little commitment.
I like to use a paper to add color and pattern to a room. It’s a fun way to pop an unexpected look into a room. My favorite is to use a boldly patterned & colored paper in a small unexpected space, such as the backs of a built-in bookcases, a fireplace bump out, an accent wall or even on the ceiling! I think the best balance is to use a highly patterned paper in a space where the fabrics and finishes are not busy and competing with the paper. The paper should be thought of as perhaps another textile in the space and can be organic or inorganic in design, depending on what other elements are already present.
The balance between the two is what makes a successful room. I like to design a room and then choose the wallpaper at the end, much the way I would with a paint color. But occasionally a really fabulous wallpaper could be the inspiration for the entire room! Be bold, brave and keep your guests on their toes. The oohs and ahhs will be endless!
